Why now

A generation ago, an energy system was simple to reason about. A small number of large plants. Predictable demand. A grid designed to move power in one direction, to people who could only ever be its consumers.

That system no longer exists.

Generation is distributed across thousands of independent sites instead of a handful of large ones. Supply now fluctuates with weather instead of a dispatcher's schedule. Storage, demand response, and a grid built to move power in every direction at once have turned a linear system into an interconnected one — every part affecting every other part, continuously, in ways a single engineer can no longer hold in their head.

Engineering had to change to keep up, and it did. The standard for judgment has risen every year for a decade, and the people doing this work have risen to meet it.

The software they rely on has not.

Walk into almost any serious engineering organization in this industry today and the infrastructure behind its most consequential decisions is still a patchwork: spreadsheets holding assumptions no one remembers making, disconnected tools that don't share a common understanding of the same asset, judgment that lives entirely in the experience of a handful of senior engineers because no system was ever built to carry it.

Closing that gap is not a matter of building a faster version of the same tools. It requires infrastructure that can reason about the system the way the best engineers already do — continuously, across every part that now affects every other part.
